An insider’s perspective on one of Sonoma Wine Country’s most beautiful wedding venues, from a filmmaker who has been returning for more than a decade.
I’ve filmed weddings at beautiful venues throughout Northern California, but Vine Hill House holds a particularly special place in my heart.
Located just outside Sebastopol in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, Vine Hill House is the wedding venue where I’ve worked more than anywhere else. I’ve been filming celebrations here for over a decade, and I always look forward to coming back.
The property is gorgeous — vineyards, redwoods, oak trees, apple orchards, beautiful gardens, and sweeping views across Sonoma Wine Country. But what makes Vine Hill House truly special is the combination of that natural beauty with an exceptionally experienced team.
It’s one of the most thoughtfully run wedding venues I’ve encountered. And for couples who want a beautiful wedding film without spending half their celebration posing for cameras, it has another major advantage: an extraordinary variety of picturesque locations, all within easy walking distance.
A Beautiful Sonoma Wine Country Wedding Venue
Vine Hill House sits on the O’Connell Vineyards estate, surrounded by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards and heirloom apple orchards. The O’Connell family’s agricultural roots in Sonoma County stretch back more than a century, and they’ve owned the Vine Hill estate since the 1930s.
That history is part of what makes the property appealing. Rather than feeling like a wedding venue designed to imitate Wine Country, Vine Hill House feels like an authentic part of it.
The gardens are lush, the vineyards stretch into the surrounding valley, and the grounds include a beautiful grove of redwoods, Douglas firs, and mature oak trees. Depending on where you stand, the setting can feel like a redwood retreat, a vineyard estate, or a country garden — and all those different landscapes are remarkably close together.
Beautiful Variety Without the Travel Time
As a wedding filmmaker, this is one of the things I appreciate most about Vine Hill House. At some venues, getting to the best portrait locations involves driving, long walks, or complicated scheduling. That can take a surprising amount of time away from the celebration.
Here, we can move between redwoods, vineyards, oak trees, orchards, and gardens in minutes. Each offers something different visually, allowing us to create a varied, cinematic wedding film without keeping the couple away from their guests for long.
My approach is primarily documentary. I want couples to enjoy their wedding, not feel like they’re spending the day on a film set. Vine Hill House makes that balance particularly easy to achieve.
The People Behind Vine Hill House
Beautiful scenery attracts couples to a venue. The people running it can make all the difference in their experience. One of the biggest reasons I love working at Vine Hill House is owner Dan O’Connell and his team.
Dan has been hosting weddings here since 2000, and he knows this property extraordinarily well. He’s attentive to details that many people might overlook, and he has strong opinions about how things should be done. I’ve learned to trust those opinions.
A Lesson in Wedding Filmmaking From Dan
I remember one of my earlier weddings at Vine Hill House. I was setting up a camera near the ceremony aisle when Dan approached and firmly told me I needed to move it. He didn’t want the camera appearing in the background as the bride walked down the aisle.
I was a little taken aback by how direct he was, but I followed his guidance. And he was absolutely right.
Moving the camera meant we had a beautiful, unobstructed view of the processional. Once the bride had reached the front, I could reposition it to capture the ceremony from the angle I wanted. It’s a practice I’ve followed here ever since.
That experience taught me something about Dan: his attention to detail isn’t arbitrary. It comes from years of observing what works and understanding how to create the best possible experience for couples.
Knowing the Land and the Light
Another thing that continually amazes me is Dan’s ability to predict exactly when we should head into the vineyards for golden-hour portraits. He knows the changing light throughout the seasons so well that his timing is often accurate to within a couple of minutes.
I’ve learned that when Dan says it’s time to go, it’s probably time to go. That knowledge comes from a deep familiarity with the property, and it makes a real difference in the photographs and films we’re able to create.
A Community of Wedding Professionals
Over the years, I’ve developed relationships with many of the other wedding professionals who regularly work at Vine Hill House. There’s something wonderful about arriving at a wedding and seeing familiar faces — photographers, caterers, DJs, and coordinators you’ve worked alongside before.
We know the property, understand one another’s workflows, and can communicate easily throughout the day. Dan actively cultivates those relationships, and his warmth toward the people who work here is genuine. Whenever I return, he greets me like an old friend.
That sense of community translates into smoother collaboration and, ultimately, a better experience for the couple.
Wedding Ceremonies Beneath the Redwoods
One of Vine Hill House’s signature features is its beautiful ceremony setting among the trees. Towering redwoods, Douglas firs, and mature oaks create a natural enclosure, with glimpses of the surrounding gardens and vineyards.
The trees provide a sense of intimacy and welcome shade during warm summer afternoons. For wedding videography, I particularly love the contrast between the scale of the trees and the personal moments unfolding beneath them.
A couple walking down the aisle, exchanging vows, or sharing a glance with family — these moments feel especially beautiful against the natural setting. After the ceremony, guests can transition into cocktail hour and the reception without leaving the property.
Golden-Hour Wedding Portraits Over the Vineyards
Sunset is one of my favorite times to film at Vine Hill House. As the afternoon light turns golden, the vineyards take on a warm glow, the surrounding hills soften, and the landscape becomes particularly beautiful.
I recommend building a short window into the wedding timeline for sunset portraits of the couple. This doesn’t need to be a lengthy session. Often, ten or fifteen minutes is enough to capture beautiful footage and photographs before returning to the celebration.
Because the best locations are so close to the reception, we can make the most of that time. And, of course, Dan usually has a pretty good idea when the light will be at its best.
Real Weddings I’ve Filmed at Vine Hill House
Every wedding brings something different to the property, and over the years I’ve had the pleasure of documenting celebrations with a wonderful range of personalities, traditions, and styles.
Jonathan & Anna — A Wedding With Rockstar Energy
Some weddings have an energy that’s impossible to forget. Jonathan and Anna’s celebration was one of them. They were a beautiful, playful couple, surrounded by guests who brought the same joyful spirit to the day.
One of my favorite moments came at the end of the ceremony. Rather than simply walking back down the aisle together, Jonathan played Hey Jude on his guitar as they recessed, bringing a wonderful burst of personality and musical energy to the celebration.
Those are the kinds of moments I love capturing — when a couple’s personalities come through in a way that couldn’t belong to anyone else.
Kim & Will — Honoring Korean Traditions
Kim and Will’s wedding was another beautiful celebration at Vine Hill House. One of the distinctive elements of their day was incorporating traditional Korean wedding attire.
I love documenting weddings that bring together different cultural traditions and personal histories. The clothing, rituals, and interactions between families can add wonderful layers of meaning to the story. Vine Hill House’s varied landscapes provided a beautiful setting for capturing both the celebration and those personal details.
Kennedy & Braden — A Heartfelt Vineyard Wedding
Kennedy and Braden’s wedding was warm, heartfelt, and full of joy. Surrounded by vineyards, redwoods, and the people closest to them, their celebration brought together the natural beauty of Sonoma County with the personal connections that make each wedding unique.
Their film reflects how I approach wedding storytelling: combining cinematic imagery with the real voices, interactions, and emotions of the day.
More Than a Decade of Memories
My history with Vine Hill House goes back more than ten years. The first wedding I filmed here was Abi and Seth’s, a beautiful celebration that blended Jewish and Indian traditions.
I’ve returned many times since, and the venue has become a familiar and meaningful part of my work. The landscape changes with the seasons, each couple brings their own personality and traditions, and there’s always something new to discover.
Food, Wine, and Hospitality
The food at Vine Hill House has consistently been excellent in my experience. The venue works with established Sonoma County caterers, including Trends Catering and Park Avenue Catering, who know the property and its event operations well.
But one of my favorite aspects of the hospitality here is something guests might never see. Dan is insistent that wedding professionals take a proper break for dinner. He doesn’t want cameras or other equipment cluttering the dinner table. Instead, we sit down together, enjoy a family-style meal, and have a chance to catch up.
It’s a small detail, but I think it says something meaningful about the culture Dan has created. He has high expectations for how weddings should run, but he also values the people who make them happen.
Planning Your Vine Hill House Wedding: A Few Tips
Trust the Venue’s Experience
Dan and his team understand how long transitions take, how the light changes, and how to organize the celebration so everything flows naturally. If they recommend a particular timeline or approach, there’s usually a good reason.
Save Time for Sunset Portraits
Talk with your photographer and videographer about setting aside ten or fifteen minutes for portraits of the two of you around golden hour. It’s a small investment of time that can produce some of the most memorable imagery of the day.
Consider the Season
Spring brings fresh greenery and flowering landscapes. Summer offers long evenings and lush vineyards. Autumn brings harvest season, changing colors, and beautiful late-afternoon light. Each season offers a different experience.
Give Yourself Permission to Be Present
One of the things I encourage couples to do is give themselves permission to enjoy their wedding without worrying about documenting every moment.
When you have an experienced professional team capturing the celebration, you don’t need to be everywhere at once. Your wedding film gives you the opportunity to relive the moments you experienced and discover some of the wonderful things happening around you that you may not have noticed.
Knowing those memories are being preserved can make it easier to relax, connect with your guests, and be fully present as the day unfolds.
Wedding Videography at Vine Hill House
I’m Nile Sprague, founder and lead filmmaker at Mendocino Photo & Video. My approach is rooted in documentary storytelling. Before focusing on weddings, I spent years working in documentary film and photojournalism, telling real stories about people and communities.
I focus on the unscripted moments, meaningful interactions, voices, vows, and speeches that give each wedding its character. I also love creating cinematic imagery, but I try to do that without turning the wedding into an elaborate production.
Having filmed more weddings at Vine Hill House than at any other venue, I’ve developed a familiarity with the landscape, lighting, and people that helps me work efficiently and unobtrusively. And I genuinely enjoy coming back.
